Aflac Insurance is more than a company with a multi-talented duck touting its services in everything from yoga and aerobics classes to race car driving in commercials. The Columbus-based insurer is also one of America's best companies to work for, according to Fortune magazine's annual survey.
Aflac ranked No. 50 on the 2016 list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," dropping one spot from No. 49 in 2015. The company holds the distinction of being part of the list for 18 consecutive years, the most for any Georgia business or any company in the insurance industry.
"It is an incredible honor for Aflac to be named by Fortune magazine as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, now for an extraordinary 18th consecutive year," Aflac chairman and CEO Dan Amos said. "It's only fitting that our employees, who work diligently to serve our policyholders and make our company profitable for our investors, have the opportunity to work in an environment of integrity, respect, ethics, enjoyment and amity."
Hundreds of companies vie for a place on each year's list. The selection process for applicant companies opting to participate includes an employee survey and in-depth questionnaire about their programs and company practices. Great Place to Work then evaluates each application using its unique methodology based on five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.
Creators of the list's methodology have found that when employees consistently trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy their co-workers, they believe they work for great organizations.

More than 1,100 Aflac employees completed the survey for 2016. Of those, more than 90 percent ranked categories such as atmosphere, communication, bosses and work challenges as "great." Ninety-four percent said they feel good about the ways Aflac contributes to the community; 93 percent are proud to tell people that they work for Aflac.
"Now more than ever, it is important for companies to prove they are great workplaces," said Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. "Top talent expects as much as they seek new opportunities, and customers are demanding it, as well, as they decide where to spend their dollars. The 100 best workplaces are at the top of the heap in demonstrating they have a high-trust, high-performing culture."
