Westinghouse Electric's recent bankruptcy filing has further scrambled the future of Georgia Power's massive nuclear construction project, four years after the power company assured regulators it would be "well protected" in such a scenario.

Now, Georgia Power’s parent, Southern Company, is pushing for help from the federal government.

Westinghouse, the main contractor on Georgia Power’s Plant Vogtle near Augusta, Ga. and Scana Corps’ Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina, recently sought bankruptcy court protection.

And questions are circling about whether Georgia's largest utility business will ask the state to make customers take on even more risk beyond the billions of dollars in overruns already on tap at Plant Vogtle.
