The Coca-Cola Foundation on Wednesday pledged $1 million to local community relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The Atlanta-based beverage giant said the donation will be used to provide resources for food and shelter as well as long-term rebuilding efforts.

The storm, one of the most devastating in decades, struck the densely populated Northeast, leaving millions without power and paralyzing the region.

Coca-Cola said it delivered pallets of bottled water to hard hit areas in New York, New Jersey and other parts of the region. The company said it also is working with local authorities and agencies to determine additional needed assistance, including beverage donations.

“Coca-Cola always stands ready to help when people are in need,” said Muhtar Kent, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Our hearts go out to those affected by this destructive storm.
