The Coca-Cola Foundation on Wednesday pledged $1 million to local community relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The Atlanta-based beverage giant said the donation will be used to provide resources for food and shelter as well as long-term rebuilding efforts.

“Coca-Cola always stands ready to help when people are in need,” said Muhtar Kent, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Our hearts go out to those affected by this destructive storm.
