Clearwater Paper Corp. plans to close a manufacturing plant in Thomaston, the company said Wednesday. The company said 150 workers will be affected.
Spokane, Wash.-based Clearwater makes private label tissues for major retailers and wholesale distributors at 15 manufacturing plants in the U.S. and Canada.
The Thomaston plant, about a hour and a half south of Atlanta in Upson County, is a tissue converting and distribution facility.
“We have concluded that consolidating regional converting and permanently closing Thomaston was the solution to best serve the needs of our southeastern customers and improve the overall logistics of our national manufacturing network,” President Tom Colgrove said in a statement.
Most of the equipment will be transferred to Oklahoma City and Shelby, N.C. The company said the shutdown may take a year, with some operations running into 2014. The company said the shutdown will cost $6 million to $7 million.
