It’s one thing for a company to toot its own horn, but another when employees anonymously do the blowing.

Workers at Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A blew loud enough to land the well-known fast-food restaurant chain on Glassdoor’s annual list of 50 Best Places to Work.

While Chick-fil-A (No. 43) is the only locally based company making the list, many others have operations in the metro area or in other parts of the state.

At the top among large companies is Boston-based Bain & Co., a global management consulting firm that has offices in the Terminus building in Buckhead. Glassdoor also lists the top 50 medium-sized employers, and Alexandria, Va.-based Motley Fool, a multimedia financial-services company, tops that group.

Glassdoor, a job listing and employment resource provider, said more than a half million employees filled out the anonymous online survey between November 2012 and November 2013. Employees rated their company overall, but also expressed how they felt about their chief executive officer and senior management, career opportunities, pay and benefits, culture and values and work-life balance. They were urged to be honest about the good and bad.

Chick-fil-A, which has about 75,000 employees nationwide, received 3.7 stars out of five, based on 403 employee reviews.

Company spokeswoman Kim Hardcastle said the Glassdoor recognition isn’t one the company proactively pursues. She said the restaurant chain is “committed to creating a positive and rewarding work environment” for all its workers.

Ninety-three percent of respondents approved of company founder S. Truett Cathy, 92, who stepped down as chairman and chief executive officer last month, replaced by his son, Dan Cathy. The $4.6 billion chain with more than 1,700 locations, all of which shut their doors on Sundays, ranked highest in culture and values, followed by work\life balance, senior management, compensation and benefits and career opportunities.

Also, 75 percent of the Chick-fil-A employees taking the survey would recommend the company to a friend looking for a job.

“We strive to continually offer opportunities for leadership development, promotions that lead to management roles and competitive wages,” Hardcastle said.

Other companies making the Glassdoor list that have a large presence in metro Atlanta include John Deere (11), Southwest Airlines (21), Publix (32) and Starbucks (39).

The 50 Best Places to Work list reflects employers with 1,000 or more workers, and a second list, 50 Best Medium-Sized Companies to Work For, includes employers with 250 to 999 workers.
