The Atlanta children's clothing company Carter's is expanding its online sales and extending its international reach, its CEO said this week.

The company's fledgling e-commerce site is selling ahead of schedule, chairman and CEO Michael D. Casey said in a second-quarter conference call Wednesday. The company is spending more to keep up with increased demand, and is taking steps to bring its e-commerce distribution in-house.

In addition to making it possible for international customers to order online, Carter's is focusing on expansion in Canada and is paying greater attention to its licensing partners abroad. In the near term, Casey said, the company sees opportunities in China and Japan. It also intends to open at least 100 stores in Canada over the next five years.

Carter's made $20.8 million in the quarter, a 64 percent increase over the $12.7 million it made in the same quarter last year.
