An Idaho building materials and construction services firm said Thursday it plans to move its headquarters to Atlanta, creating or relocating 150 corporate jobs within the region over the next two years.

BMC makes building products including doors, trusses, door and bath hardware and specialized millwork. The company does most of its business west of the Mississippi River.

Chief Executive Peter Alexander told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the headquarters relocation is part of the company’s strategy to grow not only in its core Western states, but also throughout the Southeast and part of the Mid-Atlantic region.

“We’re looking to grow in markets with 12-month building cycles,” he said.

BMC spun out of Boise Cascade Corp. in the late 1980s. BMC sought bankruptcy protection after the recession ravaged homebuilding.

But the company has emerged strong since 2010, Alexander said, noting 40 percent annual growth in revenue for each of the past two years, driven by single-family residential, apartment and commercial development.

BMC is privately held and does not disclose detailed financials, but it last posted more than $1 billion annual in revenue and has more than 5,000 employees nationwide. The company operates more than 100 building supply centers, design centers, and plants throughout the West and in North Carolina.

BMC hired a consultant to pick its new headquarters and chose Atlanta from a list of a dozen cities, Alexander said. The state’s business climate, global connections through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and talent pool of finance, technology and management professionals were key selling points, he said.

Alexander, a metro Atlanta resident, said the company was looking for a larger market to find the talent needed to accommodate and manage its corporate growth plans.

Much of the company’s operations and technology workers will remain in Boise, though top executives will relocate immediately to an undisclosed office in Atlanta and grow here over the next two years.

BMC is at least the third significant company that recently emerged from bankruptcy protection to relocate to metro Atlanta. Tennis equipment company Prince Global Sports and related golf apparel brand Jones Global Sports announced plans earlier this year to relocate from other states to Buckhead.
