Buckhead Atlanta, the $1 billion mix of luxury retail, restaurants and high-rise apartments at East Paces Ferry and Peachtree roads, plans to open its first stores and eateries on Sept. 18.

Jeff Zeigler, senior managing director of retail services for developer Oliver McMillan, said his company is spending $10 million on landscaping and will plant 180 trees on the property, including some oaks as tall as 35 feet. Cobblestone streets, lush plantings and street-level retail and cafes will help calm traffic and encourage walking, he said.

Tenants will begin moving into the pair of 22-story apartment towers beginning Sept. 2. Zeigler said more restaurants and retailers will gradually open. Streets that have been closed within the project also will reopen next month.

The project originally was called Streets of Buckhead but was stalled by the real estate bust before Oliver McMillan took it over and renamed it.
