SCAD FASH, the metro area museum dedicated to global fashion and film , will host two new exhibitions beginning next week.
"A Fashionable Mind: Photographs by Jonathan Becker" will feature more than 60 photographs by the legendary Vanity Fair photographer. The images reflect his decades of photographing personalities, artists and designers including Andy Warhol, Zac Posen, Bill Blass and Gloria Vanderbilt.
Originally curated by Andre Leon Talley, the exhibition is Becker's first solo exhibition in more than 30 years. The photographs, which capture the most intimate and public moments of some of the biggest names in popular culture, span 35 years of Becker's career.
SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace, whose family has been photographed by Becker, says he is the kind of photographer who sees something in his subjects that others do not see.
“Jonathan is eminently well read and truly brilliant," says Wallace. "He has traveled the world and has the gift of putting his subjects – royalty or regular folks – at ease so that he may access a glimmer of their souls.”
Becker himself will be in town on Jan. 20 for a conversation with VF contributor, Bob Colacello. The event, from 7-8 p.m. at SCAD Show, 173 14th St. NE., is free and open to the public.
Along with the Becker exhibition, SCAD FASH will host the first U.S. exhibition of artist, stylist and designer Daniel Lismore of London. The exhibition, "Be Yourself; Everyone Else is Already Taken," also opens on Jan. 22.
Visitors can view 30 custom ensembles created by Lismore for SCAD FASH. Lismore's creations mix couture with found objects to create unique, one-of-a kind fashion statements. The artist and designer has had previous exhibitions at Tate Modern, London and Tate Britain, London. He currently serves as creative director for Sorapol, a luxury womenswear line .
