The Emmys tend to be more prestigious but local TV and radio folks have other ways to take home trophies.

Last week, the Radio Television Digital News Media Association handed out its regional awards and NBC affiliate WXIA-TV, which has undergone major changes under news director Ellen Crooke the past year, took home eight of the 12 awards that went to Atlanta stations. (Atlanta competed with major markets in Florida as well, including Orlando and St. Petersburg.)

Doug Richards, who writes the delightful Live Apartment Fire blog, defines some of the efforts made by his employer WXIA-TV here.

WSB-AM won several radio awards, too, though its commercial competition in Atlanta is pretty bereft nowadays.
