Just over a year ago, WXIA-TV dropped “Atlanta & Company” hosts
Holly Firfer
and
Tom Sullivan
for
Christine Pullara
. Presumably, one person is cheaper than two.
Firfer started as a host of the "pay for play" show with V-103's Ryan Cameron in the fall of 2005. Sullivan joined in 2007, replacing Cameron. While some of the show is pop culture oriented and has a "Regis and Kelly" feel, there are also pure infomercial segments. The hosts interview people who pay to be on the program, which airs at 11 a.m. on weekdays.
Firfer, for a time, was also a morning host at 92.9/Dave FM while Sullivan was at Star 94 with the now defunct Steve & Vikki Show. Both lost their radio jobs before the end of their “Atlanta & Company” gigs.
In the past year, neither Firfer nor Sullivan have found full-time jobs.
Firfer, a former full-time CNN anchor, has returned to CNN as a fill-in anchor. She also did a fun series for CNN's airport channel called "Roadside America" in which she visited quirky locations such as the Burt Reynolds Museum in Jupiter, Fla. and the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Ala.
She is also doing podcasts for Victoria Stilwell, a British dog trainer best known as host of "It's Me or the Dog." Stilwell now lives in Atlanta. Firfer and her husband Shawn Arnold were the focus of an episode that aired in late 2008 about her dogs and their chewing issues. Firfer and Stilwell became friends after taping that episode. ("She cured my dogs," Firfer said. "Seriously. They're amazing, totally different dogs. She's a miracle worker!")
On weekends, she also helps out her husband Shawn Arnold at his new coffee place Funky Monkey in Atlanta at the Irwin Street Market.
“If something is fantastic came along, I’d do it,” she said, in terms of full-time jobs. “I’m working on so many little projects. I love doing a bunch of different things. I get to do things that interest me, which doesn’t tie me down.
Sullivan, who worked at 94.1 from high school until 2007, has focused on hosting corporate MC gigs. He has been the MC at events for the likes of Comcast, Americasmart and the Juvenile Diabetes Association. He used to do those all the time for years while at Star 94 and his reputation and name has helped him get more even though he is no longer on TV and radio.
He said he still has dreams about both. “I have dead air dreams,” he said. “I don’t know what’s on the prompter. I can’t read it or I’m not prepared.”
“I really miss radio,” he added. TV, he said, was fun but more structured. He is still hoping to get back on either medium.
He’s also working on a pilot for a TV show in which people who are not doing jobs they really love are given a chance to go down a path to something they are passionate about.
"It's a chance to host without selling roofs or college tuition," he said, referencing two of "Atlanta & Company's" biggest clients while he was there: ATLroof.com and Herzing College.
The pair remain friends and just had lunch last week. “We still text back and forth,” Sullivan said. “We hang out at the Funky Monkey. She ended up being my best friend and ally during that show.”
