Two CW shows shot in Atlanta have just been renewed and they couldn't be more different: superhero drama "Black Lightning" and family soap "Dynasty."
The return of "Black Lightning" was expected given its strong ratings and feedback from fans. "Dynasty" ratings are not nearly as strong, but the CW clearly likes the show's panache and it received an international Netflix distribution deal as well.
"We're beyond excited to have another season to play with the Carringtons!" said Sallie Patrick, an Atlanta native who is the show runner. "We look forward to building and deepening relationships, introducing new characters, and shaking up current dynamics. The show has really hit its stride the last several episodes, and we're setting up an exciting shift for season two."
The CW also gave early renewals to eight other shows: "Arrow," "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," "The Flash," "Jane the Virgin," "Riverdale," "Supergirl" and "Supernatural," entering its whopping 14th season.
"Riverdale" has seen strong growth in its second season, fueled in part by Netflix adding season one to its lineup.
The CW is adding a two-hour block on Sunday nights starting this fall.
"As the CW expands to a six-night, Sunday through Friday schedule next season, we are proud to have such a deep bench of great returning series for 2018-19,” said CW president Mark Pedowitz. “By picking these ten series up for next season, we have a terrific selection of programming to choose from when we set our fall schedule in May, with more still to come. And I’m especially happy that we’ll continue to work with the incredibly talented casts, producers, and writers who create the series our fans are so passionate about.”
As noted previously, "Valor" - a military drama shot in Atlanta - appears dead though that has not been officially stated. Three other scripted shows are up in the air as well: "Life Sentence," "iZombie" and "The 100."
