The TNT nurse drama "Hawthorne" starring Jada Pinkett Smith has been given a clean bill of health — and a second season.

The show so far has averaged 3.4 million viewers after eight episodes, holding fairly steady week after week. That’s nowhere near the level of TNT’s biggest show “The Closer” but is on par with other TNT shows such as “Saving Grace,” “Leverage” and ‘Raising the Bar.”

The Atlanta-based cable network has created three solid hits with “Leverage,” “Raising the Bar” and “Hawthorne” in the past year. All draw 3 to 4 million viewers a week. The reality show “Wedding Day” was the one big whiff.

"Hawthorne": your prognosis

  • A clean bill of health. Glad to see it coming back.
  • Too sickly. Not worth another look.

TNT’s closet competitor USA Network hit a home run with “Royal Pains” this summer. That show, which was renewed last week, is averaging more than 6 million viewers.
