This past weekend, Kelly Stevens came back to his old haunt B98.5 without long-time on-air partner Alpha Trivette. It's not a full-time job but it's a step back into the game after two years unemployed.
He sent me this email:
I was asked to return to B98.5 to help with voice tracking on the weekends and to do vacation fill in. It's part time but I'm grateful for the opportunity to return to what I love. It will be odd being on the air without Alpha (first time in over 20 years!) and in many ways it's like starting my career all over again. I have to remind myself that there are a lot of us veterans of radio that might never be able to get back on the air, so again, I must keep being grateful for the chance that I've been given. I still hold out hope that Alpha and I can find something together…but it's been sometime now and I'm ready to get back to doing what I love best…just thought I'd let you know what's going on. Hope you're doing well.
And how about this for irony. Kelly & Alpha spent nearly a decade on B98.5. Their prior job: Kool 105.1 in Denver. Kelly & Alpha were replaced by Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke. McCoy was recently dumped by B98.5 and is now at… Kool 105.1. Small world!
“It took me a little while to learn all the buttons again,” he said. “Everyone was very welcoming of me coming back.”
Alpha in the meantime is acting in plays. He sent me this email this morning about his upcoming drama “Splinters.” (though I can’t make it because I’ll be in D.C.)
Kelly said he plans to see Alpha in the play on Friday.
Financially, Kelly said he’s hanging in there with voice-over work and had some savings to live off of. “I live near Spaghetti Junction, not under it yet,” he said.
Alpha is still seeking a radio job.”We’ve been looking everywhere,” he said.”We just haven’t had any luck yet. God bless him.”
