TV best bets with 'The Strain,' 'Tyler Perry's Too Close to Home,' MTV Music Video Awards

The Olympics are over but TV programming rolls on.

The one time MTV focuses on music with its Video Music Awards Sunday will honor Rihanna with a lifetime achievement award. For perspective, she's 28. MTV itself is 34 years old.

FX brings back "The Strain" for a third season the same night. The most notable debut is TLC's first attempt at scripted fare on Monday "Tyler Perry's Too Close to Home."

In the meantime, AMC offers up season three of "Halt & Catch Fire" on Tuesday (which is shot in Atlanta) and USA returns with the back half of season four of "Chrisley Knows Best," also shot in Atlanta.

ABC honors 20 years of "The View"on Tuesday as well. We'll see how the network handles all the controversial comings and goings, including that ill-fated brief time with Rosie O'Donnell.

Former Atlantan RuPaul debuts his all-star "Drag Race" edition on Logo Thursday while Alpharetta's Jeff Foxworthy has a comedy special on Netflix Friday.

“America Ninja Warrior” 8 p.m. NBC — Philadelphia finals.

“Bachelor in Paradise” 8 p.m. ABC — A frustrated bachelor continues to deal with the emotional breakdown of his crying ex who is unable to move on from him.

“Rizzoli & Isles” 9 p.m. TNT — A mortician's body is found in a casket at his own funeral home, leading the team to a serial killer.

“Tyler Perry's Too Close to Home” 9 p.m. TLC (new series) — A woman who's on the fast track to success in Washington, D.C.'s political arena retreats to safety after her potentially career-destroying secret is revealed.

“Major Crimes” 10 p.m. TNT — A jogger takes a fall down the steps of the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, leading the team to zero in on a divorce attorney with plenty of irate clients.

“Mistresses” 10:01 p.m. ABC — Marc focuses on his music and bonds with Sofia.


“America's Got Talent” 8 p.m. NBC — Third live show.

Pretty Little Liars” 8 p.m. Freeform — One of the ladies goes rogue to find proof that Noel Kahn is Uber.

Bachelor in Paradise” 8 p.m. ABC — A bachelor ends his relationship with a fickle bachelorette and leaves Paradise; a popular couple return to Paradise and deliver a date card that stirs up drama for two couples.

Cake Boss” 9 p.m. TLC (eighth season debut) — Buddy and the team make a pirate-theme cake, and a new branch of the bakery prepares to open its doors in Connecticut.

Halt and Catch Fire” 9 p.m. AMC (third season debut) — Donna and Cameron explore their options to expand beyond chat.

The Have and the Have Nots” 9 p.m. OWN — The police hunt a fugitive who has close ties to Katheryn.

Zoo” 9 p.m. CBS — It's a race for Mitch and Abraham to find Jackson before General Davies and the International Animal Defense Group can locate him and prevent the team from making a cure.

“The View: 20 Years in the Making ” 10 p.m. ABC — A look back at the history of TV's "The View," with behind-the-scenes stories, favorite memories from celebrity fans, top moments and appearances by cohosts from years past. Host: Barbara Walters.

“Chrisley Knows Best ” 10 p.m. USA (fourth season fall debut) — Todd insists that the family accompany him and Julie on their 20th anniversary vacation to Hawaii.


“Masterchef” 8 p.m. Fox — "Top Chef" Season 7 winner Kevin Sbraga is the guest judge.

“America's Got Talent ” 9 p.m. NBC Results for 12 acts. 

“Duck Dynasty ” 9 p.m. A&E (10th season finale) — Willie takes away electronics by holding "No-Tech Week."

“Suits ” 9 p.m. USA — Harvey, Louis and Donna search for a link to Sutter's inside trading.

“Toddlers & Tiaras ” 9 p.m. TLC (seventh season debut) — There's a clash between Cambrie's Court and the Sassy Supremes.

“Greenleaf ” 10 p.m. OWN — Grace, Ray and Sophia go to court.

“Mr. Robot ” 10 p.m. USA — Fsociety releases a video; and Darlene acts on an old desire.

“The Night Shift” 10 p.m. NBC — Scott and Jordan face danger while on a rescue mission at a spreading wildfire.

“Tyrant” 10 p.m. FX — Molly returns to Abuddin to pursue her daughter's killer.


“RuPaul's All Star Drag Race” 8 p.m. Logo (second season debut) — RuPaul brings back some of the best.

“60 Days In 9 p.m. A&E As three new participants enter the program, the others fight for acceptance in the pods.

“Braxton Family Values 9 p.m. WE (fifth season finale) Tensions rise between the sisters at Toni's slumber party

“Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders 9 p.m. CMT (11th season debut) The ladies are back and not wearing much clothing.

“I Love Kellie Pickler 10 p.m. CMT (second season debut) — Kyle decides to play matchmaker for Kellie's friend Jen.

“Sex & Drugs & Rock n Roll 10 p.m. FX — Tensions come to a head when someone from the band's past resurfaces.


“Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy: We've been Thinking” 3:01 a.m. Netflix — The two comics do a special at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis.

“Killer Women” 8 p.m. TLC Wives who murdered their husbands are profiled.

“Love Thy Neighbor” 9 p.m. OWN — Troy has a heated discussion with Danny's family.

“Killjoys 9 p.m. Syfy — Dutch ends up being seized by an angry mob as a result of Pawter's plan to free Old Town from Jelco's rule.

“Dark Matter” 10 p.m. Syfy In a desperate hope to save their ailing leader, the crew attempt to pull off a dangerous mission inside the headquarters of Dwarf Star Technologies.
