Apolo Ohno speed skated through Atlanta yesterday on a book tour marathon, hitting 19 stores in 15 cities in seven days. The Olympic medal winner's new book "Zero Regrets" is part inspiration, part autobiographical.
At the Buckhead Barnes & Noble, he arrived in a huge bus with his photo on the side of it. He signed quickly and efficiently. He answered questions politely and eloquently. He was in and out in an hour. Later that day, he did the same at a Lawrenceville Books-a-Million.
Using a ghost writer, who taped his commentary while he sat in a sauna, Ohno described how his single father inspired him, how difficult it was to miss the 1998 Olympics and the controversies that dogged him at the 2002 Winter Olympics. He also spends a few pages on his "Dancing With the Stars" victory in 2007. He is now a motivational speaker and charitable spokesman for Century Council's Ask, Listen, Learn program to promote a healthier lifestyle.
He grew up without his mom but said his dad "always pushed me in the right direction." He also credits sports with saving him from what could have been a really bad life.
Like most, he thinks Jennifer Grey or Brandy will win this season's "Dancing With the Stars." "The show is much more difficult than you can imagine. It's insane!" It helped his mental game. "It gave me some inner confidence I never knew I have," he said. "That plays a big role in sports."
Down the road, he'd like to try some acting. And he has started his own nutritional supplement.
As for Julianne Hough (his former dancing partner) and her relationship with Ryan Seacrest: "If she's happy, I'm happy for her. She's so talented. I just hope she just enjoys her life. I think Ryan's a great guy. I wish them the best."
My wife asked him a question about a quote from a Russian philosopher she had read that had inspired him. This got him going. Notice he can multi-task quite well, answering the question and signing books at the same time:
