Who went home? Nobody!
Qaasim Middleton received the fewest votes but managed to wow the judges with a wild, nutty "Come Together" and got the earliest save ever.
There was a sense that Daniel Seavey would survive even if polls show most people who read these types of blogs wanted him to go home. And he will be back next week for what will be a double elimination. So who did I think would go home? Rayvon Owen was my call. And I was... wrong. Again.
This week's mentor was Nile Rodgers, part of Chic, who has worked with everyone from Madonna to Bob Dylan to Daft Punk.
Unfortunately, this was a relatively weak week for the top 11 so I'm not sure how helpful Nile was. There were only a few good performances and too many duds.
My favorite? Close call between Joey Cook and Jax.
Least favorite? Daniel Seavey struggled to connect with "Lost Stars." He was more lost.
My rankings of the top 11 1. Jax 2. Joey 3. Clark 4. Qaasim 5. Quentin 6. Nick 7. Adanna 8. Rayvon 9. Tyanna 10. Maddie 11. Daniel
Lack of "Idol" history: Adanna asked Ryan if he had ever met Jennifer Hudson. Umm...
Adanna Duru ("Love You I Do" Jennifer Hudson/ "Dreamgirls") - Her vocals are not always in "control," as in the zone at every point. It felt a wee bit "shouty" but wasn't bad. Keith: "It was hard to hear you in the beginning. You had to start kind of low.... Good song choice." JLo: "You sounded good on the high parts... You're singing the perfect man for me. It didn't come through... It has to come from a real place." HCJ: "You look like a movie star, that's for sure. Everything was good. Everything was strong. Many times you look down the barrel of the lens. What I recommend... sing to them. You got to preach to the room. The connection will be better even at home."
Grade: B/B-plus
Chance of sticking around: Passable but hardly guaranteed
Daniel Seavey ("Lost Stars" Adam Levine/ "Begin Again") - He is oddly off key for the first half of th esong and he is smiling when he shouldn't be. At least his hair adds a couple of inches on him. And the second half is better. JLo: "You did an okay job... I felt a lot of emotion but I don't think it was your best performance." HCJ: "Rehearsal is imperative but not spontaneous." Keith liked how he changed the falsetto melody.
Grade: B-minus/C-plus
Chance of sticking around: Not great. But isn't that the case every week? What do I know?
Rayvon Owen ("Stayin' Alive" Bee Gees/ "Saturday Night Fever") - He decides to run with his falsetto. It's not very good. It opens very tired and leaden, like a smooth jazzed out version. The interlude with the bassist livens things up a bit toward the end. HCJ: "I admire the arrangement. It was surprising to me. How do you remain interesting. One thing that can keep you interesting is give you a set of lyrics you can chew on. It was fine. It was pleasant. Every week, it's a bunch of high falsettos. It needs more substance." Keith wants an "Oh wow!" moment.
Grade: B/B-minus
Chance of sticking around: 50/50
Nick Fradiani ("Danger Zone" Kenny Loggins/ "Top Gun") - He felt like he needs to loosen up and drops a guitar. He does to a degree. He enters the "mildly problematic" zone. He doesn't give it enough edge. He needs to go for it. But it's pleasant enough. Keith said he improved. JLo: "You're like our cool guy... I feel like that song, the tone was perfect for you. I see you still in your head... Sing. Have fun. Be. That." HCJ: "That song doesn't given you anything to work with. There are silly words. Be sexy! I love Kenny Loggins but that's the wrong song."
Grade:B/B-plus
Chance of sticking around: Good
Joey Cook ("Mad World" Tears for Fears / "Donnie Darko") - This was one of Adam Lambert's signature songs. She does a very very effective job, very emotional. It showed a different side of her. JLo: "You were giving me Sia vibes. It was a different side to you." HCJ: "You're finding ways to widen that lane. That is a great song, a great choice. It allowed you to do something different. And chew on some lyrics." Keith uses the word "artistry."
Grade: A-minus
Chance of sticking around: Certainly
Tyanna Jones ("Circle of Life" Elton John/ "The Lion King") - Ugh. Terrible song. Cloying and very very Disney. As Keith said, she had yet to have a bad performance. That might have jinxed her. She tried hard to sell it but I wasn't buying. She hit a few nice big notes but otherwise, I will file this away and vote for her anyway. HCJ said she was straining and pushed too much. "Intonation issues and yelled the whole way through." Keith said had serious pitch issues with the track. JLo:
Grade: B
Chance of going through: Not 100% for the first time
Jennifer Lopez ("Feel the Light" from new film "Home") - She doesn't have a great voice but she knows to sing songs that don't tax her range. And this song works just fine for her. Cool dress that doubles as a screen. The make-up person did go crazy with the glitter around her eyes.
Quentin Alexander ("You're the One That I Want" - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John from "Grease") - The go-to "arrangement" switch up is usually to slow down a fast-paced song, at least in the beginning. And he predictably does that, turning this classic into an intense solo ballad. Ultimately, it mostly worked. Who woulda thunk it? Keith said he has heard that version before. "You have an amazing voice you're still figuring out how to use." JLo: "Very haunting and beautiful." She wasn't sure if it translated as much as he felt it. HCJ: "Very adventurous interpretation. But if you're going to feature your vocals. One of the biggest things is not thinking of the pitch. There is emotion and technique. That was horribly out of tune."
Grade: B-plus
Chance of going through: Pretty good
Maddie Walker ("Let's Hear It For the Boy" Deniece Williams/ "Footloose" soundtrack) - This felt very Six Flags. Pleasantly innocuous. Very lightweight. JLo said she was, at best, "adorable." HCJ hated it, said he doesn't know who she is. Keith said it was simply the wrong song.
Grade: B-minus
Chance of going home: Maybe, maybe not
Kenny Loggins ("Footloose") - At age 67, he is still having fun with his meal-ticket song he's sung a "million" times. And he sounds good.
Clark Beckham ("Sunday Morning" Maroon 5/ "Cheaper by the Dozen 2") - I felt a little sleepy at first but once he hit the middle, he picked it up and he gave it his Clark soulful kick. It was far better than last week. HCJ said he put his "arrangement" to that song and "knocked it out of the park." Keith: "Such a good singer... Just put a little bit of a smile in it." JLo: "It was so you."
Grade: A-minus/B-plus
Chance of moving forward: Excellent
Jax ("Grow Old With You" Adam Sandler/ "The Wedding Singer') - An unusual choice but this one worked. She was adorable. Keith: "It was beautiful." JLo: "It played into the quirkiness of your voice." HCJ: "You are a high risk high reward performers. It paid off. It was lovely and sweet and personal. Quick word of advice: you have to sing by yourself, don't rush. Just make sure you're in time."
Grade: A-minus
Chance of moving forward: solid
FOR THE SAVE
Qaasim Middleton ("Come Together" the Beatles from "Across the Universe") - He is wild and crazy and delightful. The vocals are a mess as usual but honestly, who cares? HCJ: "Arguably the best performance of the night. But we have talk about the issue of the save."
Grade: A-minus/B-plus
Chance of moving forward: good
MADDIE WALKER'S MEDICAL CONDITION
Scott Borchetta, the mentor for "Idol," told Taste of Country that while Maddie Walker was ill, it wasn't a ruptured appendix, as former 'Idol' contestant Savion Wright tweeted a few days back.
“She still doesn’t know what it is,” Borchetta says. “She’s still feeling a little bit weird but a ton better than last week. We really don’t know what it was, but there was something around her appendix that was irritated.”
She will perform Thursday night.

RATINGS
"Idol" hit a season low 8.36 million viewers and a 1.8 18-49 share last Thursday. The show generally fares better on Wednesdays than Thursdays. I can't imagine tonight's numbers will be much better. It will be up against new "Grey's" and "Scandal," "The Blacklist" and NCAA basketball.
Good news: Starting next week, "Idol" will be on Wednesdays.
"Empire," by the way, is pulling in "Idol" numbers circa 2011: 16.4 million last night with a 6.4 18-49 rating.
NEXT WEEK'S MENTOR/HELPER
Boy George for 80s week!
