With 218 singers and 61 minutes, the editors have a tough challenge to balance variety and drama with actual singing.

For the first time, the judges ditch the "Chorus Line" set up at first and just ask for 38 of the most memorable auditioners. It's been months since they've seen these contestants and these are the ones who still stick in their minds. The 38 have no idea they have already been given a bye into the next round as many perform... poorly.

Some continuje to impress: Adam Lasher (bracing), Garrett Miles (Mr. Blues man pours it on), Trevor Douglas (confident, measured, fun, best of the night), Joey Cook (adorkable!)

A few do okay: Jax, Mark Andrew, Emily Brooke, Sal Valentinetti, Amber Kelechi  (despite a panic attack, she does okay, though she's more attitude than vocal substance.)

Many are underwhelming or simply overbaked:  Tyanna Jones, Savion Wright, Adam Ezeglian, Hollywood Anderson

And some simply fall apart: Shannon Berthiaume, 17, St. Paul Minn. starts with a very strong Stevie Wonder, then she forgets the words and crumbles.

But alas, it does not matter. All 38 go through.

The other 175 or so go through the traditional "line of 10." Half will be eliminated. Reno Anoi'i , Priscilla Washington and especially Jaq MacKenzie sound solid but Priscilla goes home.

They namedrop a few folks who were featured in the original auditions who are going home, including Tara Honda, who I liked a lot.

Erica Washington overheated"Girl On Fire" but made it through. Both Ron "Big Sexy" Wilson and Michael "Dance With Me JLo!" Simeon slide through as well.

Then we see Gabby Z freeze up partway through her song. What happens next? Stay tuned... tomorrow!
