Atlanta has had a couple of reps on the CW's "America's Next Top Model" over its first 13 cycles. One even became a runner up. (Nic Pace, 2005) This season, starting Wednesday at 8 p.m., Atlanta has two contestants that could take it all the way. And both are far more intense personalities than Nic.
Alasia Ballard, 18, a high school student from Wheeler High School, makes an impression virtually the first moment the show starts. "I'm going to be ferocious!" she said. She falls to the ground when she sees host Tyra Banks. Banks asks if she's wearing a wig. She admits she is and takes it off, showing off her flowing hair.
Her bubbly persona quickly stands out. She effuses over exotic-looking Naduah, saying she’d be with her if she were a lesbian. Her take on the house the top 12 are living in: “This crib is ill! You can rave in the tub!”
She quickly rubbed some of the others the wrong way, especially Krista, who thinks she’s fake, and Angelea, who is shaping up to be the resident beeyotch. Alasia is not shy about fighting back.
Here’s video of Alasia:
This is an email interview with her, too. Unfortunately, she was too busy with school and such to do a phone interview with me. I sent out the questions before I screened the first episode:
What modeling experience do you have? I did not have any modeling experience prior to ANTM.
What high school did you go to? I am a senior at Wheeler High School set to graduate in May. My plan is to eventually attend Spelman College. Majoring in business/ business management.
Why did you decide to try out for ANTM? Trying out for the show was spur of the moment. A friend told me about Atlanta casting call coming up so I decided why not what's the worst that can happen.
Why do you have what it takes to be ANTM? I believe I have what it takes because I am very determined to succeed. I am mold able and able to learn from constructive criticism.
My personality is very light and goofy. I love life!
What's special about you personality wise and feature wise? My natural long eye lashes seems to be what I am most complimented on.
Do you see yourself more as a magazine model, a runway model and/or a TV model? I am interested in doing all three. I like t.v modeling because it gives me a chance to include my personality
Any quirks about you, you think people should know about? My creative impulsiveness seems to come off as quirky
Will you be a pretty loud presence on the show itself? Will you be involved in at least some of the interpersonal drama? Or will you lay back and stay under the radar? Yes, I'm usually a loud presence, as far as drama you'll just have to watch and find out.
Dacula resident Anslee Payne-Franklin, 23, is also intense but very different. She is a country gal who tried out for ANTM early on but got pregnant. Her daughter "came first," Anslee said in a phone interview. "She's my queen bee."
Married last October, she went to Los Angeles soon after to tape ANTM.
Anslee possesses strikingly angular features and had long, flowing hair – at least at the beginning of the episode. “I am missing 18 inches of my hair,” she said, as made clear by the photo on the right.
Anslee grew up in Lawrenceville, attending Collins Hill High School, where she never felt like she fit in. “I was never trendy,” she said. “I didn’t wear designer clothes. I wore what my mom could afford. I was a big tomboy.”
She said she’s used to being judged so tough words from the likes of Tyra and Mr. Jay didn’t phase her. “I have a thick skin — except when it comes to my daughter.” And like most contestants with kids, she deeply missed both her daughter and her husband.”He’s my rock,” she said. “Being away from him just as much killed me as being away from her.”
The house where the women lived was “like high school,” she noted (as we’ve observed time and time again.) But she did find friends to hang with. “I was a bit of a nurturer given that I’m a mom. I’m also volatile. I wasn’t going to let anyone walk over me. If you ask a question, I’ll tell you the answer.”
Indeed, during the first episode, she too gets into a spat with Angelea over nothing much in particular, it seems. They just clash.
She wasn’t buds with Alasia. “We had a giant age gap,” she said. (Five years? I guess it is between 18 and 23.) “Her life and mine are opposites on the spectrum. She lives in the city. I live on nine acres. She’s still in school. I’ve worked two jobs.”
Right now, she’s a nanny. She was a beer tub girl and bartender, too, before ANTM came along.
I have no idea if she wins but she did say, “I got to live my dream. I’m totally happy the way everything went.”
As for interests in the fashion world, she’d like to focus on makeup. “I love the clothing industry,” she said, “but I think you can make a lot of money in makeup campaigns, too.”
ANTM has lost more than a quarter of its viewers from its peak, averaging around 3.5 million viewers. “You can tell it’s had its better moments,” she said, “but I think it’s still a really good program.”
