House Democrats launched a new digital ad campaign Wednesday seeking to woo Republican voters in Georgia's 6th District, the latest effort to convince conservatives to back Democrat Jon Ossoff's campaign.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is behind the ad that targets voters on Facebook and Instagram who identify as variations of “conservative” or Republican across the district, which spans from east Cobb to north DeKalb.
The campaign is a quiz that asks users "Who said THAT about Karen Handel?" It features several quotes from U.S. Sen. David Perdue, who defeated her in the 2014 battle for an open U.S. Senate seat, and former state Sen. Dan Moody, a vanquished rival in last month's vote who has yet to endorse her.
It’s the latest attempt by Ossoff and Democratic voters to peel off Republicans in the June 20 matchup with Handel. And although Ossoff has proclaimed himself a “make Trump furious” candidate, his more recent stump speeches and campaign ads have walked a finer line. He is more likely to talk about cutting wasteful spending and bringing jobs to the north Atlanta suburbs than to attack Trump.
It could be paying off: An estimated one in five Republicans voted for Ossoff in the April contest.
The race to represent the district has become the premier political contest of the year and is seen nationally as a referendum on Donald Trump after he struggled in the district. It's also shaping up to be the most expensive House race ever.
