Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is getting steady use out of a Secretary of State Brian Kemp lookalike.
His campaign for governor launched an ad over the weekend mocking Kemp’s macho pickup truck, featuring a stammering knockoff Kemp trying to explain to an elderly voter his record as the state’s top election official.
The exasperated voter ends the 30-second spot with an admonishment: “Shame on you, Brian Kemp. Get that big truck outta here.”
It plods away, bookended with hand-written messages declaring the candidate “incompetent” and “untrustworthy.”
It's the second ad of the runoff cycle featuring a Kemp lookalike. Cagle earlier featured another elderly voter with the same impostor questioning Kemp's business record.
That ad has its roots in a Kemp television ad in which he questions "Jake," a suitor interested in one of his daughters, while holding a double-barrel shotgun.
This one poked fun at Kemp's other provocative ad, which featured the candidate saying from his pickup truck he'd "round up criminal illegals and take 'em home myself" if necessary.
The ad is the first TV salvo since the secret recording that revealed Cagle supported “bad public policy” – in the form of a controversial private school tax credit – to prevent another rival from getting outside support. Cagle has tried to downplay the audio as a “political exchange.”
Both of his attack ads against Cagle have featured senior citizens, an overt targeting of the most reliable voting bloc in the July 24 runoff.
In a response, Kemp’s campaign spokesman Ryan Mahoney accused Cagle of “continuing to lie because he’s losing” and questioned “his rejection of Donald Trump and full-throated endorsement of Jeb Bush.”
Neither Cagle or Kemp were early supporters of the president. Cagle endorsed him during the Republican National Convention in 2016, while Kemp said at a debate he supported the president but never signed a formal endorsement because he was never asked to do so.
