A first round of voting in a special election to fill a House seat in the city of Atlanta could go into extra innings next week.

A Fulton County Superior Court judge has stayed Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s decision to disqualify Tyrone Brooks Jr. as a candidate for House District 55, recently vacated by his father.

On an administrative law judge’s recommendation, citing lack of proof of a year-long residency in the district, Kemp ordered that signs declaring Brooks’ disqualification to be placed at polling stations, and ordered that votes cast for him in the Tuesday election not be counted.

On Thursday, Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams reversed Kemp’s order, but did not schedule a hearing on the matter until June 18 – two days after the vote. A runoff is likely. Six other candidates are also in the race.
