Metro Atlanta's Never Trump movement will be out in force on Monday when Evan McMullin, a darling of the Republicans who reject their nominee, brings his campaign to Georgia.
McMullin, who has been called the "third most likely person to be president," is a little-known 40-year-old former CIA officer who announced his campaign as an independent candidate after U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse and other more prominent Donald Trump skeptics refused to enter the race.
Running as a conservative alternative to Trump, McMullin has little name recognition nationally and is only on the ballot in 11 states. But he has an outside shot of winning Utah, the state where he grew up. A recent Deseret News poll showed McMullin, a Mormon who grew up in Utah, with 22 percent of the vote - within striking distance of Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The folks at 538 outlined an extremely improbable, but still mathematically possible, scenario where he could win the White House if he wins that state.
His chances in Georgia, where he will not appear on the ballot, are infinitesimally small. But a gaggle of influential Republicans who reject Trump have rallied around his write-in campaign.
McMullin's appearance is at Monday at 7 p.m. at the Blueprint Church in Atlanta for what the campaign calls an "African American Voter Values Town Hall" moderated by hip-hop artist Sho Baraka. You can find the details here.
