One year ago, CNBC named Georgia the No. 1 state for doing business – a ranking that Gov. Nathan Deal was happy to tote to the finish line of his re-election campaign.

The business network won’t announce its 2015 rankings until next week, but they just got more than a tad interesting. CNBC has announced that a state’s legal protections for gays and lesbians (or the lack thereof) has become one of its metrics by which a state’s business climate will be judged.

While some business owners consider such laws examples of government overreach (something we also cover in our Business Friendliness category), the overwhelming sentiment of business seems to be clear.

Twenty-eight states (including Georgia) have no bans on discrimination based on sexual orientation, Cohn notes.
