Republican Rick Jeffares is plunging into the political muck with a "dirty jobs" tour that begins Monday at a wastewater treatment plant in south Georgia.

The candidate for lieutenant governor’s tour aims to bring him to job-hungry businesses in search of workers with technical college educations but not college degrees. He also wants to highlight his proposal to freeze college tuition for incoming freshmen.

“We need doctors and lawyers and engineers,” Jeffares said. “We also need costume designers and special effects artists for our film industry, technicians to process wastewater, plumbers and electricians.”

Jeffares, a former state senator, is one of three leading Republicans running to succeed Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. Former state Rep. Geoff Duncan and state Sen. David Shafer are also vying for the GOP nomination in the unsettled race.

The Democratic side of the contest is also up in the air. Business executive Sarah Riggs Amico is her party's top candidate, but former state Sen. Vincent Fort is among the other contenders eyeing the race.
