The historic Trolley Barn will remain in the hands of Inman Park residents and preservation advocates, thanks to a decision made Thursday by Invest Atlanta.

Invest Atlanta decided this week to sell the property to a local nonprofit that has cared for the facility for decades, according to a press release issued Friday by the Atlanta City Council.
The Atlanta and Edgewood Street Railway Company (AESRC) was granted approval to acquire and preserve the Inman Park Trolley Barn site. The purchase price for the 3/4-acre tract is $650,000.
The Trolley Barn was initially the maintenance facility for Atlanta’s first electric-powered trolley line, which ran down Edgewood Avenue from Five Points to Inman Park beginning in 1889.
The city of Atlanta has owned the building since 1976. It underwent a restoration in 1987 with the help of AESRC. The barn is now a popular community events venue.
AESRC does not plan to make any material changes to the historic building.
“This is a very exciting time for Inman Park. The Trolley Barn is an important part of Inman Park’s and Atlanta’s history,” said AESRC president Steve Hayes in a statement.
