The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it had awarded nearly $250 million in contracts for statewide construction projects.

The department said its the largest monthly contract investment since 2006, according to a press release.

Nearly half of the funds will go to road resurfacing or maintenance projects, GDOT said in a press release.

“As roadway conditions improve, motorists will experience first-hand the long-term benefits that result from the proper maintenance of our statewide transportation system," Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said.

Here are several of the largest investments in the metro Atlanta area:

Hall County, Jackson County: complete the connection from Athens to Gainesville

  • 7 miles of widening and reconstruction on US 129/SR 11 from SR 332 at Talmo in Jackson County to SR 323 in Hall County; construction of a bridge over Allen Creek

  • Resurfacing on SR 6 beginning east of US 278 (C.H. James Pkwy) and extending west of Austell Powder Springs Road
  • Intersection improvements on US 278 (C.H. James Pkwy)

One of the most expensive projects will be realigning the South Calhoun Bypass in Gordon County:

  • 6.2 miles of construction to realign US 41/SR 3/SR 53 (South Calhoun Bypass) and construction of three bridges and approaches
  • Cost: $44 million
