Gas prices are falling, and more Georgians are planning to hit he road during Memorial Day Weekend.

AAA Auto Club Monday said Georgia drivers are paying an average $2.64 per gallon for regular unleaded. That’s 4 cents less than a week ago and 14 cents less than the same time last year.

Metro Atlanta has the most expensive gas in the state – an average of $2.69 a gallon, according to AAA. Nationally, motorists paid $2.85 a gallon, 2 cents less than last week and 6 cents less than a year ago.

Perhaps that's why AAA also expects more people to travel this holiday weekend, which marks the unofficial start of summer vacation season. The club expects about 1.3 million Georgia residents to travel this weekend. Nearly 1.2 million of them will travel by automobile – 3.8 percent more than last year, the club found.

AAA’s travel estimates are based on economic forecasting and other research.
