"Gifted" star Mckenna Grace becomes a Girl Scout in real life

Mckenna Grace plays Mary, a 7-year-old math prodigy in “Gifted,” which filmed in coastal Georgia. While she might not master Mary’s extraordinary capacity for conquering complicated math equations, Grace shares her affinity for making friends and helping others, values the Girl Scouts organization holds dear.

“Gifted” filmed partly in Savannah, where Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop in 1912. And so it was entirely fitting that, like her character does in the movie, Grace has become a Girl Scout in real life. She received her sash during a ceremony last month in Los Angeles.

“It was fun to wear a Girl Scout uniform and play with the other girls on the set. I’m so excited to officially be a Girl Scout,” the 10-year-old actress said during the event, which also stressed the importance of volunteering. Girl Scouts of the USA counts 1.9 million girls and 800,000 adults in its ranks.

“Volunteers serve selflessly on the front lines of our organization, undertaking the ever-important work of teaching girls essential life skills through experiences in Girl Scouts — skills that will chart their course for success for a lifetime,” said interim CEO Sylvia Acevedo.

Added Grace: “My character in ‘Gifted’ learned a lot from the grown-ups in her life, so it’s important to me that other girls do, too. Role models can change girls’ lives.”

In a key scene in the movie, Mary stands up for a classmate named Justin — played by Atlanta actor Michael Kendall Kaplan — after a schoolbus bully wrecks Justin’s class project.

“Being a Girl Scout means standing up to bullying, and volunteering in your community,” Grace said. “Being a Girl Scout means striving to be the best version of yourself.”
