Sarah and Walton Clarke will chair the fifth annual "A Family Affair" -- which raises funds for research at the Emory Alzheimer's Disease Research Center -- on Nov. 20 at the Piedmont Driving Club.
This year's event will honor Emory neuroscientist Lary Walker, PhD, who recently received the Met Life Foundation Award for Medical Research for his innovative work. Dr. Walker's breakthrough research reveals how certain Alzheimer's proteins act as "seeds" that spread the disease throughout the brain.
Host committee members include Duvall and Rex Fuqua, Sarah and Jim Kennedy, Billi and Bernie Marcus, Harriet and Charlie Shaffer, and Carolyn and Andy Young.
"The growth in support for Alzheimer's research at Emory has been truly phenomenal," said Allan Levey, the Betty Gage Holland Chair in Neurology, and the Director of the Emory Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC).
"We are so grateful to the hosts of 'A Family Affair for their many contributions toward increasing public awareness of the support Emory offers Alzheimer's families across Georgia," Levey continued.

More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and 120,000 of those are Georgia residents. Every 68 seconds, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed, and Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death. Since 2000, the incidence of Alzheimer’s has risen 66 percent.While there is no cure or effective treatment for Alzheimer's, the work at Emory is encouraging.
The Emory ADRC is key in the fight against such harrowing statistics, as the only NIH-designated comprehensive care research center in the Southeast, and "A Family Affair" raises needed support each year. (Click here for past coverage of the annual event).
