A chef who has worked with Kevin Gillespie for years is branching out with his own venture.
Joey Ward is working on his own restaurant in Poncey-Highland in the former Island Flowers & Gifts space at 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE, Eater Atlanta first reported.
Ward, who will remain at Gillespie’s Glenwood Park restaurant Gunshow until the first of the year, said in an interview with AJC food editor Ligaya Figueras that his restaurant will be “a forward-thinking concept that will be very unique to the Atlanta area. There is definitely nothing like it. We’re really excited about it.”

He will open the eatery with the help of investors and his wife, Emily, who will handle the business side of things.
He expects to be able to share more details, including the restaurant name, in the fall.
Ward, who has been working on the project for the past two-and-a-half years, said he chose the location because of its proximity to popular areas including Ponce City Market, Old Fourth Ward and Virginia-Highland.
He added that while he's excited to strike out on his own, leaving Gunshow will be bittersweet.
“Gunshow has been my home since it was just an idea,” he said. “That’s going to be an interesting moment when the day comes to say goodbye.”
