Even if you haven't seen "Moonlight," you've probably heard a lot about it.
The Barry Jenkins-directed film recently received a Golden Globe for "Best Motion Picture - Drama," and snagged eight Oscar nominations, including "Best Picture."
Unbeknownst to some, singer/actress Janelle Monae isn't the only Atlanta tie that the critically-acclaimed film has.
"Moonlight" is based on a play with ties to Atlanta's Alliance Theatre.
The film was inspired by "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue," a play written by Tarell Alvin McCraney. In 2008, McCraney won the Alliance/Kendeda Competition.
Alliance Theatre will celebrate the success of the film by hosting a free screening of "Moonlight" on Feb. 8.
"Too Heavy for your Pocket," a play from this year's Alliance/Kendeda Competition winner will premiere at the theater a few days earlier on Feb. 4.
Each year the competition provides a stage for "the best emerging playwrights with a full production for the competition winner and staged readings for four competition finalists," according to a press release.
