As President Obama visits Cuba, a study by travel app Hopper says the launch of scheduled commercial airline flights from the United States to Cuba expected later this year could drive air fares to the island nation down as much as 50 percent.
The average cost for a flight to Cuba from the United States is now $717, according to the study by Hopper, which makes an airfare prediction app.
Hopper said it projects that with the lifting of restrictions and added flights, average round-trip prices from the United States to Cuba would decline nearly 50 percent to $364 on average.
Hopper predicted that nonstop roundtrip flights from Miami would cost $275.
Delta Air Lines and other carriers have applied for routes to Cuba in preparation for the resumption of scheduled commercial airline flights from the United States to Cuba for the first time in more than 50 years.
Atlanta-based Delta, which in recent years has operated charter flights to Havana, has filed an application to fly to Cuba from Atlanta, New York, Miami and Orlando.
While only charter flights to Cuba have been allowed from the United States heretofore, airline flights via Mexico can be 20 percent cheaper, according to Hopper.
