Hartsfield-Jackson again relaunching composting facility project

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is trying for a third time to launch a composting and recycling facility it calls Green Acres.

The airport is inviting companies to submit proposals to design, build and operate a facility south of the fifth runway off Forest Parkway in Clayton County. The facility would compost and recycle airport waste as well as yard trimmings from the city of Atlanta’s public works.

Green Acres has been a vision of airport officials since 2012.

The Atlanta airport first invited companies to submit proposals more than a year ago. But in April 2015 it cancelled the process to clarify solicitation documents and reissue them.

Then in September 2015, the airport learned it received no valid proposals from companies willing to build and operate the facility.

Hartsfield-Jackson senior sustainability planner Liza Milagro said this time, firms will have more time to put together proposals, and "the hope is that I have de-risked the project and accelerated the [return on investment]" for interested companies.
