Get a taste of the underground dining scene at the Punk Foodie Festival

On Saturday afternoon, Scofflaw Brewing Co. will host the first-ever Punk Foodie Fest, a celebration of Atlanta’s underground dining scene. The event will highlight eight Atlanta chefs and cuisines from all over the world, including Eastern European, Filipino, home-style Vietnamese, and even a creative take on burgers.
The first-year event comes to Atlanta by way of Sam Flemming, an underground food culture advocate, blogger, Instagrammer and China-by-way-of-Alabama ex-pat.
The origins of Punk Foodie have their roots in a life spent abroad. After moving from China to Atlanta five years ago, there was one thing that Flemming knew he needed to do: bring his 20-plus years of food experiences from Shanghai to the states. And that’s where Punk Foodie enters.
Growing up in Alabama in the 1970′s and 1980′s, Flemming told Access Atlanta that food options were more than lacking. “There were lots of meats and casseroles made with Campbell soup. But when I got to Asia, I found so much good food.”
Upon returning back to the U.S., Flemming says the idea for Punk Foodie was born.
“I believe there’s a story to be told about the dishes, through the people. It’s like Athens, Georgia in 1982, there’s so much talent and so much passion and excitement. It’s just like a music scene but with food. That’s what pulled me in.”
Location: Buckhead/Northeast Atlanta - 1738 MacArthur Blvd NW; Time: 12 p.m. until sold-out, June 25; Admission: Free; Website: punkfoodie.com.
