Georgia Ports Authority board members will vote Tuesday to transfer 42 acres to the state’s technical college system for a Quick Start training facility.
The property, carved out of the 1,600-acre “megasite” in Pooler which has long been marketed to auto manufacturers, is owned by the state and will be given to the school system for free.
It can be transferred between two state entities if the ports authority decides the site is not needed for future port, warehouse or expansion purposes.
“Of course any development of the property would more than likely complement our efforts to drive cargo through our ports,” GPA spokesman Robert Morris said. “The state department of economic development and the Governor’s office have sole discretion over how and when to use this property to attract jobs and economic development.”
Mitsubishi-Hitachi Power Systems uses about 120 acres to build turbines and generators at the megasite near the intersection of Interstates 16 and 95. An additional 400 acres is available for industrial development, Morris said. Another 57 acres is set aside for commercial/office development with the rest committed to roads, rail, utilities and environmental mitigation.
