Effingham County offensive lineman Ashton Nelms didn’t know he was making America’s newest viral recipe when he slapped a honey bun in the middle of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Nelms was just trying to add a few more pounds before the upcoming football season.

“(Effingham County coach John Ford) started buying honey buns, and we started putting them on PB+J’s,” Nelms said. “And then (strength and conditioning coach Ross Garner) found out, and he said, ‘Next time you make one, make me one,’ and that’s when he posted it on (X).”

The post has 3.5 million views and 30,000 likes on X. Sports personalities like Mike Golic Jr. and Andy Staples offered their approval.

“I’ve always maintained the #1 sign of true fat kid status is the ability to see sandwiches in unlikely places. this made me shed a tear,” Golic Jr. wrote.

The sandwich worked, too. Nelms started the summer around 250 pounds and ended it around 271.

The offensive linemen have since coined an official name for their delicacy.

“That’s going to be the ‘Honey Hammer,’” senior Josh Edwards said. “We kind of just came up with that on the fly. It’s a honey bun, so incorporate the ‘Honey,’ and then the ‘Hammer,’ it’s just a lot of calories at one time.”

The Honey Hammer didn’t just take off online — it’s become an Effingham County staple.

“Everybody started doing it since he made it,” Georgia Tech commitment Jordan Dillon said. “It’s a good way to gain weight. I don’t need to gain anymore weight, but it’s really good.”

The sandwich has already evolved for higher caloric intake. Garner offered the ‘Honey Hammer 2.0,’ which replaces the bread with two honey buns.

“Even more calories than the first time,” Edwards said.
