On March 30, 2017 - the last day of Georgia’s 2017 legislative session - a bridge on I-85 in Atlanta caught on fire and collapsed.

“That is one of the busiest stretches of highway in Atlanta,” said AJC transportation reporter David Wickert on the latest Politically Georgia podcast. “About 250,000 vehicles a day go through there. It was a major disruption for a lot of commuters.”

Host Greg Bluestein and Wickert discussed the bridge fire and collapse, how the Georgia Department of Transportation handled the fire and speedy repairs, and what the state has learned to prevent a similar situation from happening.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors.
