A national publication’s selection of Georgia as the nation’s top place to do business on Monday became an unofficial kickoff for Gov. Nathan Deal’s quest for a second term in office.
In the absence of a more formal campaign launch, the elaborately staged press conference announcing Site Selection Magazine’s blessing took on the trappings of a full-fledged political event.
Flanked by Republican allies and smiling executives from Home Depot, UPS and other corporate titans, the governor portrayed the magazine’s endorsement as validation of his first term in office as he made a not-so-subtle pitch for a second.
“We’re just at the beginning,” said Deal, who faces two GOP rivals next year. “We’re going to continue to grow and we’re going to continue to get better.”
