The creation of Georgia’s newest city in north-central DeKalb County faces a critical committee vote in a state House committee today.

The House Governmental Affairs Committee is slated to take up the issue of Lakeside at its 1 p.m. meeting. Senate Bill 270 has so far passed along party lines, with Democrats taking up complaints that the would-be city takes in most of the existing community of Tucker. A bill to create a city of Tucker stalled this year, though advocates for that city continue to argue Lakeside’s borders will doom their effort.

It is unclear if the Lakeside proposal will advance. The committee is also slated to take up a resolution that could stop the initiative: a request from the DeKalb House delegation for a “cooling off” period for creating any new cities until DeKalb has time to examine the issue countywide.
