Georgia Democrats want those applying for licenses to carry weapons to complete a four-hour firearms safety course after July of this year.

House Bill 735 would add language to Georgia law that says the person applying for the license can satisfy the requirements if he or she is a law enforcement officer, on active duty in the military or is a state-certified weapons trainer.

The proposed law would exempt those who already have a permit until they renew it.
