Today is the last day that Georgians can register to vote in time for this year’s election.

Georgia residents who aren’t already registered can sign up online, or they can mail a paper application. Any application that’s mailed and postmarked Tuesday will be accepted.

Those who register to vote in time will be eligible to participate in the Nov. 6 general election for governor, Congress and more.

There are already more than 6.8 million registered voters in Georgia. But new voters and those who have moved to a new county need to register.

To be eligible to register to vote in Georgia, you must be a citizen, legal resident and more than 17 1/2 years old. In addition, you can't be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude or found mentally incompetent by a judge.

You can check your registration status online at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov.

Once voters are registered, Georgia offers several ways for them to cast their ballots.

Any Georgia voter can vote by mail, at early-voting locations starting Oct. 15, or at neighborhood precincts on Election Day.
