Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams has won the inaugural Emily's List Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.

The award, named for the former Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, recognizes women in state or local offices who “show passion and dedication through advocacy and public service.”

Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011 during an attack in Tuscon, has become a leading advocate for gun control. She will present Abrams with the award during a ceremony April 29.

Emily’s List supports female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights and bills itself as the largest resource for women in politics.

“Stacey Abrams has shown us an extraordinary commitment to community, dedication to women and families, and civility that have been the highlights of former Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ career, in and out of office,” Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily’s List, said in a statement. “Stacey knows how important it is for people to have a voice in government, and she has been that voice for Georgia families every day. The Emily’s List community — now more than 3 million members strong — is thrilled to present her with this award.”

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
