The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has sent out an alert saying it is the victim of a fraudulent check scam, with the agency warning anyone expecting a refund or some other form of payment from the DNR to be extremely careful about cashing checks with the agency’s name on it.

The bad checks include the agency’s correct address and phone number. But instructions on the check direct people to send a text message after depositing it to a number registered in California in an attempt to access personal banking information.

The agency is asking anyone who receives a check he or she suspects is fraudulent to call 404-656-3500.
