Any public school that offers athletics would have to let local magnet school students try out for sports under legislation proposed in the state House.

Rep. Brian Prince, D-Augusta, will introduce House Bill 16 on Wednesday. The bill would allow any student in a magnet school to try out and participate in sports at their traditional zoned school.

The bill does not address students who are home schooled, who are also barred from public school sports.
