The Georgia Aquarium has launched a new live webcam showing a zebra shark pup inside an egg case.

The pup can be seen moving about inside what is also called a mermaid’s purse. The dark spot near the bottom is the yolk sac, where the pup gets its nourishment.

"This pup (egg) was laid back in December, so we're expecting to see movement any day now," a spokeswoman said in an email Monday. It typically takes about 4-6 months for a zebra shark pup to hatch, depending on conditions, she said.

It remains to be seen if the pup's birth will gain as much attention as April the giraffe; a New York zoo live-streamed her pregnancy earlier this year and millions of people around the world watched.

Zebra sharks, an endangered species, can grow to up to 12 feet. Newly hatched young are eight to 10 inches long.

Female zebra sharks lay the large dark brown or purplish black egg cases.

The webcam is available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other webcams inside the aquarium show live footage of animals such as beluga whales, African penguins and a green sea turtle.
