The food service permit for Pizza Plaza in Norcross was recently suspended following a second consecutive failing health score.

The coolers were not working properly and foods inside were at unsafe temperatures, the inspector said. Chicken, ham, hot dogs, pepperoni were among items discarded from the prep cooler. Pasta, mozzarella cheese, meat topping, eggs and milk were thrown away from the walk-in cooler.

Before the restaurant can reopen, both coolers must be repaired, the inspector said.

Pizza Plaza, 4771 Britt Road, scored 61/U. The restaurant earned a health score of 69/U on a routine inspection in May then brought it up to a 100/A on the follow-up inspection.

In other code violations, no written procedures or documentation was provided for foods being kept on time control. Pizzas on the pizza bar and other foods on the hot bar, as well as cold food items and pre-made uncooked pizzas were away from temperature control.

It was the second time Pizza Plaza had been in violation of the time control code.

Points were also taken off because tile was missing around the baseboards in the entrance to the kitchen and in one of the restrooms. There was also a gap in the wall around a cooling unit pipe that needed to be closed. The restaurant was instructed to repair the tile immediately.

In another repeat violation, the sanitizing solution was improperly prepared in the hand-washing sink near the pizza prep area. Points were also taken off because tables were not being cleaned in an approved manner.

Pizza Plaza will be re-inspected.
