Families for Better Public Schools released a poll showing that 58 percent of Georgians support a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would expand the state's authority to approve and fund charter schools.

The poll of 400 likely general election voters was conducted last week. Its results mirror those of a poll taken four months ago.

Backers of the proposed constitutional amendment argue that charter schools provide an important alternative to parents and students. Opponents counter that having the state pay for more charter schools would deprive traditional public schools of much-needed funding at a time when school districts are already having a hard time financially.
