Plenty of contested races in Gwinnett County election

Gwinnett County voters will fill a slew of public offices and consider a sales tax for construction projects in the upcoming general election. Here’s a look at what’s on the county’s November ballot:

*Incumbent County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, a Republican, faces Democrat Jim Shealey. Nash served the county for nearly 30 years as finance director, county manager and other posts before retiring in 2004. She won election to the chairman's post in 2011. Shealey is the chairman of the Gwinnett County Democratic Party and served as a city councilman in Akron, Ohio.

*Incumbent County Commissioner Tommy Hunter, a Republican first elected four years ago, faces Democratic challenger Jasper Watkins III.

*Voters will decide whether to renew a 1 percent sales tax for construction projects. The tax would generate an estimated $950 million over six years for roads, parks, libraries and other projects.
