The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services is under interim leadership, with promotions being made from within the agency after it lost its director .

DFCS Director Rachelle Carnesale's former deputy, Ron Scroggy, will lead the agency while it searches for a permanent replacement. Katherine Herren, a former case worker and 31-year DFCS employee, has been named acting deputy director. Both appointments were made by state Human Services Department Commissioner Clyde L. Reese III, who has otherwise remained mum about the change.

A department spokeswoman confirmed earlier this week Carnesale was out. Reached by phone Friday, Carnesale declined comment.

DFCS investigates child welfare and neglect, and handles everything from child support to financial assistance for families.
